Rupert Sheldrake on the Mystery of Homing Pigeons

Rupert joins a legendary roundtable to explain why science still can’t solve pigeon navigation.

In this excerpt from A Glorious Accident, Rupert Sheldrake recaps 100 years of research into how pigeons find their way home — a mystery that remains unsolved by conventional science.

Around the discussion table are leading thinkers of the 20th century: Stephen Jay Gould, Oliver Sacks, Daniel Dennett, Freeman Dyson, and Stephen Toulmin.

Hosted by Dutch journalist Wim Kayzer and produced by Nellie Kamer, A Glorious Accident was a media phenomenon when it aired in 1993 on Dutch television and on PBS in the U.S. in 1994. The companion book became a number one bestseller in the Netherlands.

This dialogue even led to real-world experiments — including one conducted by the Royal Dutch Navy involving mobile pigeon lofts.
